Module 1 Learning Journal
During this first module I have learned a lot about how we define health, how your self-esteem can affect our daily life, and some ways to reduce our daily stress. I never knew about the 7 dimensions of health, and how some things we consider daily necessities are actually detrimental to our health and wellness.
As a college student I find myself under a lot of stress concerning when my assignments are due, and how long it takes to go through all of the reading and studying I have to do for each course. Right now I am still getting used to my new schedule but I am finding better ways to manage my time and my stress. Some things I have found that really help me are:
- Breathing exercises - if I find myself getting frustrated or over-worrying about a simple task I will sit down and take a break and just breathe.
- Physical activity - many times while studying I find it hard to focus, I restart by taking breaks from studying to stretch and walk around the house.
- Focusing on one task at a time - I have started using a planner to write out all of my tasks for the day / week based on priority, I now dedicate time to each subject and assignment so I am not worrying that I should be working on something else.
Through the discussion posts I have learned that not everyone looks at self-esteem or maintains their self-esteem the same way. Matthew's response to my post states that some things that increase his self-esteem are spending time with his son, working out, or cleaning his car. While I can't really relate to any of those examples personally, after spending some time thinking about them I do understand how someone can relate that to their self-esteem. The article Matthew posted '8 Steps to Improving Your Self-Esteem' really helped me. I have always had a hard time with feeling good and confident about myself and the article has some great tips about how you can improve yourself which I will definitely be trying out.
I feel like I definitely put the needed time and effort into this module. I spend a lot of time researching before posting my original seminar question, and before formulating all of my responses to my peers. As I went through the chapters required I had a notebook beside me where I would answer all of the Learning Outcome questions as well as the Quick Check questions. I think this really helped me comprehend all of the information the chapters went over. I don't have any uncertainties about the course content or how to do anything, if I could change one thing about how I went about this module I would try to get it done sooner instead of procrastinating until the last day. I will be taking the test after this blog post, I think it would have been easier for me to do the test sooner rather than later. The only feedback I saw was about making sure to get my responses in on time, I did not see any comments or feedback on my actual seminar posts at all. I wish I knew what I missed on my two response posts that earned 4 points instead of 5 so I can improve my responses in the future.
Some words I never knew the definitions to before are mortality, autonomy, and eustress.
I learned that mortality is another word for death, I had always related it with the word 'mortals' which is just an ending lifespan.
I have heard autonomy used before but now I understand that it means the ability to make your own decisions without coercion.
I don't think I have ever heard of eustress before. Before now I didn't realize that there was a form of 'good' stress.
